He is his own lawyer .....?

The Harrison County Commissioners have been advertising for a county Administrator. They seek someone who has a degree in Masters of Public Administration and also prefers the candidate to have a law degree.

Why the law degree? Some of the commissioners know arithmetic. The outgoing Administrator had been appointed from the Prosecutor's office. And wasn't it handy that they could exploit his law degree to also provide them with legal advice and to have him draw up legal documents rather than farming out the work to some local law firm or keeping some lawyer around on retainer?

The sense of thrift among the Commissioners is admirable. But when we get through admiring them let's do some analysis and begin by recalling to mind the adage that ends in the phrase, "has a fool for a client".

What is the reason for legal counsel, anyway? The Commissioners need a detached, unbiased legal view on some matters that may be at odds with what an Administrator would like them to hear. The Administrator also needs access to legal advice, even if he, himself, is a lawyer because given the daily flux, chaos, confusion and fog of the job, a dispassionate legal view may provide a much needed pellucid perspective on some hot topics to restore the Administrator's confidence, control and business sense when things seem to be getting beyond his daily reach. There is an honest broker point of view that will be denied to the next Administrator and the Commissioners if they pursue this false economy. Keep in mind that they also want this guy to be a Strategic Planner. When does he do this if he is also the guy in charge overseeing daily events, personnel matters, budget issues, preparing for the next commissioners meeting, and doing his and the commissioners legal work? There is not enough time in the day for the Administrator to get good at anything based upon the criteria of the job announcement. Was there a strategic plan produced from the last person holding the job? The next guy won't be producing one either. Here's an idea for the Commissioners. The Board of Education has legal counsel giving advice which they then promptly ignore. Have the Board of Education loan you their guy.

Wow! You sure know a lot about the inner workings of the County Commission. How long were you a County Commissioner????

And.... while you were gaining all this first hand, on site, knowledge, did you not notice, too, that when it is appropriate, the Commissioners do seek outside council?

Gunny, it's the individual, not the job description. A dimensional description is less confining when interviewing the variety of candidates. In my humble opinion, they should have given Mr. Andre the world to stay. He is a consummate professional. He was no lackey! Also, you should be gender-neutral in your use of pronouns!

What did he/she say???? The anonymous right above me..... said what????

Oh... wait ... maybe I'm on to something .... let me see, Chunki must be the pizza maker, right? Hummmm... that leaves Ron and Roger to be either the "security guard" and the "idiot". Wonder which is which.

Isn't blogging interesting. You can have an opinion, and if you really don't have anything to say, you can call people names!

By the way Miss Clarksburg, ITA! Mr. Andre is everything you want in an Administrator/Leader/Front Runner. I wish him the very best this next step in his career can offer.

Incidently, I see these Commissioners as very competent, consistently hard working, and they have the best interest of "the people" at hand. In choosing the next Administrator, they want to get the best of the best to serve the good people of Harrison County, like the two previous administrators have been!

I know the way blogs are set up you can be anonymous, but I feel if someone wants to call names and personally attack others(I don't care if I agree with them or not)they should have enough guts to at least give info where we can contact them or let us know who they are.
GOD BLESS

PS I had to post under anonymous, b/c I am not at my computer and forgot my password, but if you want to respond and don't know who I am my e-mail address is gopbuddy@hotmail.com

Port Crayon probably needs to get some Viagra prescribed. Our County Commission is probably the best collection of individuals that we could possibly hope for. Roger Diaz is the smartest person that I know in public office..and he is a gem of a person; Ron Watson has the benefit of years away from home, primarily in Jacksonville, where he learned what needs to be done here and he know what it takes to get it done. Mr. Angotti has his finger on the pulse of this community and he is a total asset to the Commission. Miss Clarksburg totally approves of the County Commission..and feels so lucky to have them pulling for Harrison County. Now, for other local politicos..that's fodder for another day.

Miss Clarksburg, I certainly enjoy the intelligence in your blogs, but I also enjoy your sense of humor.

Hey gopbuddy, we are on opposite teams, but did you ever think that a Republican President and a Democratic VP, or a Dem Pres and a Rep VP would make for sound government. Are the views that different???? And if the politics are drastically different, is it a bad thing to have to work it out for what is best for the country????

I am Dem, but two of the finest leaders in our country are: John McCain and Colin Powell. I can see acceptance of one of them as President with .... hummmm.... Al Gore .... John Edwards ..... as a VP or vice versa.

OK people, don't start up your name calling here .... I am a Libra and I have always wanted life to be fair and balanced!!! It wouldn't hurt to throw in a little peace and respect. Maybe our mind set needs to be tweked! Could we one day be a government by the people ... and for the people without all the disrespect and name calling???

Maybe even Ann Coulter and Hannity could mellow.

Irish blessings on ya all!

I agree with the previous post I'm not for name calling, especially anonymously, but don't get carried away. I know Ron & Chunki personnaly and have met Mr. Diaz and while they are good people and mean well I don't agree with several things the have done. But us Republicans are to blame, b/c we haven't put up much opposition

Our commissioners, Hmmmmm... Not to mention any names... but we have commissioners that believe: it is their place to influence BPorts city council, to influence their vote on a particular property's use in the city of BP because, one of their friends lives near the property. Tabling boundry issues between the City's of Nutter Fort and Stonewood until after an election because it may be unpopular(that shows leadership:)Being obtuse with the City of Cburg over use of the court house plaza for one of the largest festivals in NCWV. Then suggest that the festival be moved across town after the thousands of $$ spent on underground infrastructure for the vendors.

Miss Clarksburg... the smartest person that you know in public office is Roger Diaz? Ron Watson has learned what needs to be done here and he knows what it takes to get it done? Mr. Angotti has his finger on the pulse of this community and he is a total asset to the Commission? I would love to know why you "totally approve of the County Commission" "and feel so lucky to have them pulling for Harrison County". I know these men personally and though I like them on a personal level... where is the leadership? WHat one thing has any of these men done to establish our county as the gem of NCWV? All 3 of our commissoners have had a good run in politics, and the reason being is because they are nice guys and don't ruffle feathers.

It seems as though there is ONE person who wants to continually bash the County Commission. I would guess this has more to do with a personal issue, than the actual leadership of the County Commissioners. I do hope your faithful readers see this, as I do.

You simply can not please all of the people all of the time, but you can, as this Commission does, act in the best interests of the county as a whole, and the majority of the people they serve.

Perhaps the County Commish Basher should discuss her concerns with the three Commissioners and become a team player????? It seems she has a lot of energy that could be a positive effort.

I came across this blog because a friend told me about it. This is the sickest sight I have ever seen in my life. To me this is what is wrong with this area. WE fight amoung our selfs. Not caring if anything gets done. We all are to much into gossip. And last but not least. Can we all stop slamming the county, for as I see it,even if they do some things, that are not up to what you want. At least they do do something. They meet ever Thurs. Take it to them in person. Stop the knife in the back. This is child like. Be a man or a woman and tell them to their face. I think someone should shut this site down. To think postive things makes one postive. If you think you will stay on line by me reading this again, you you are in trouble.
