Riding name recognition built by years as a television news anchor, Erik Wells appeared headed for a big victory over challenger Dave Higgins in the Democratic primary for Kanawha County’s 8th District state Senate seat.

But in a surprise announcement, Wells said he has been called up to active duty in the Naval Reserves, and will head to Southeast Asia today. He said he would return on Labor Day.
