West Virginians are more likely to report “severe psychological distress” than people in any other state, according to a new survey.
One in eight West Virginian adults said they had a serious mental-health problem in 2004, according to the survey released last week by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
West Virginia saw a significant increase between 2003 and 2004 in the percentage of adults reporting a significant mental-health problem, from 10.3 percent to 12.7 percent. The national average was 9.6 percent.
